It’s Saturday, the day before the our second contested race against Luna Rossa. The shore crew has a long “to do” list, jut as they do before every race day.
Shore crew and sailing team pitch in. Every fitting and fixture is checked. Every structural part is checked and re-checked. Reliability is the watchword. One minor breakage or malfunction could mean the difference between winning and losing, even if the delay is for only a few seconds.
The AC72′s speed can turn minor mishaps into major problems. At close to 40 knots downwind, the boat covers its own length every second….. lose 20 sec and that’s 20 boat lengths.
When the work is done today – the boat is in lockdown until it is wheeled out for the launch in the morning.
